The Tattooist of Auschwitz

The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a 2018 historical novel published in America and based on a true story. It is written by Heather Morris who is from New Zealand. It takes place in 1942 at Auschwitz, where a Slovakian Jew named Lale Sokolov falls in love with a girl he tattooed at the concentration camp.

Lale and Identity

How do these aspects influence his actions?

Lale holds himself to a high standard. He is a well-spoken and educated individual, observant, witty, and compassionate toward others. Because of this, despite taking on a more privileged role in the concentration camp, he never forgets to distribute food and help fellow prisoners as much as possible.

How does Lale's identity influence his perception of the world?

Because of Lale's experiences and identity, he believes in the importance of connecting with others and feels empathy and compassion toward the other prisoners. His education and observant nature cause him to analyze the world around him, recognizing dangers, and opportunities to take advantage of a situation. He demonstrates this when observing the workers around him and choosing to approach Victor, developing a trading system with him.

How is he perceived by others because of this?

Other prisoners see him as someone compassionate and willing to help as well as a leader. Many go to him for help and to make connections. Guards believe he is someone to be watched and suspect, especially after he was caught with forbidden items under his mattress. Gita views him as someone compassionate, loving, and selfless.
